Bluefish were located close to the inlet to start the day for the Golden Eagle from Belmar, but after that there was a lot of riding around in order to put together a catch of 3-to-12-pound choppers.  The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands also saved the day with big blues as they hit fresh bunker throughout  the trip -- though it was best later during the hard incoming tide. Though the east wind wasn't as hard as yesterday, I didn't see anything doing in the Bay Head surf which was also loaded with weed that covered lures on every cast. Weed was also a problem in Manasquan River when I fished this afternoon with Bob Correll of Bay Head on his 23-foot Boston Whaler. Even when we found clear patches, there was no bluefish action where he had been hooking them on almost every cast in a west wind on Friday afternoon. I hooked one small blue on a 2-Tactical Anglers popper, but it got off -- and Correll only raised one other. We saw just a few small blues caught by other boats during the sunny afternoon that was quite chilly in a southeast wind.  Adam La Rosa said the Canyon Runner fleet is just picking one to three large stripers a trip after some great trollng last week. He says the large migratory bass are still here, but have moved a few miles offshore to where they are protected in federal waters. The 60-foot Ritchie will be heading to the canyons this week for a first attempt at tuna and sharks. Those interested in a possible open spot can call 732 272-4445. Capt. Joe Bogan reported average ling catches of 20 plus some large winter flounder during Saturday's wreck trip of Jamaica II from Brielle. Julius Cranston of Tenafly bagged 42 ling and two flounder. The last spring Mud Hole trip will be run on Wednesday. Results of today's Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament at Island Beach State Park wil be posted as soon as available.
