Captain's Focus

Bob Matthews weighed the first 50-pound striped bass of the season at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina today when Martin Germann of Freehold put his 51-pounder on the scale after trolling it on a Mo-Jo. Last year, Matthews weighed 13 "50's" in the shop. He noted that ocean fluking has been slow, possibly due to low bottom water temperatures. The Ocean Explorer from that marina had a beautiful day offshore today, but the sea bass were a little fussier than normal. Some limits were boated, while others caught a few keepers among many shorts. The Golden Eagle returned to Belmar on Sunday with lots of jigged small blues. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had steady action jigging 2-to-5-pound blues today, along with an 11-pound pool winner. Capt. Dave Riback notes that while Magic Hours striper fishing has been spotty so far, he's found that the 10 days around Father's Day have usually been best for that fishing. At Atlantic Highlands, the Angler tried some spots Sunday on the N.Y. side where they had to observe the 19-inch minimum -- and, of course, had to release a bunch of 18-inchers. There was a 6-pound pool fish. Some fares on the Fishermen did well Sunday as the water temperature went up to 67 degrees on the ebb. Two 7.2 pound fluke tied for the pool, ahead of a 6.7-pounder. Prowler 5 had their largest fluke of the year on Sunday -- a 9-pounder that hit pink Gulp.  South Jersey Marina still hasn't posted results and pay-outs of last week's shark tournament. I've heard there were some big makos caught in the Warriors for Warriors Shark Tournament at Brick, but they too haven't posted results. Perhaps there are protests involved. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park had a team in the latter contest that fought over 30 blue sharks and boated a 72-inch mako. That shop has been weighing a few stripers lately, most of which have come from the surf on bait -- including a 24.55-pounder on salted clams. John Miller landed a 24.5-inch, 4.8-pound fluke on Gulp.  Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant weighed a 10 1/8-pound striper from the canal on a eel for Bob Matthews, and an 8 1/2-pound fluke from the river by Joe Sanderver from Jackson. Bob Longo of Brick plugged a 12 1/4-pound striper from the local surf. Beach Vehicle Closure at Island Beach SP Begins June 23 Beginning Friday, June 23, a section of Island Beach State Park ocean beach will be temporarily closed to Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle (MSFV) traffic. A vehicle barrier will be erected approximately 3/4 mile north of the jetty. The closure is to protect Piping Plovers, an endangered species nesting in the Southern Natural Area. Due to the temporary closure, IBSP may reach its capacity of MSFVs sooner than normal.
