Captain's Focus

Tuna fishing in the canyons could hardly be any better; the big stripers finally broke open; and even ocean fluke finally made a showing on Monday. To top it off, small blues cooperated for Shore party boats today -- and sea bass continue to hit before the season closes. Capt. Chris DiStefano of Wall was aboard Frank Criscola's North Rip on Tuesday for the best striper blitz of the season. They had trolled a couple of bass on rigs before schools were spotted on top off Sandy Hook at 10:30, and they got hits on every cast with live bunkers from bass up to 52 inches. That fishing carried on for the Magic Hours fishing. Capt. Ron Semkewyc scheduled his trip with the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands just right as bass in the 30s were all over their bunkers. George Cullen took the pool with a 44-pounder because a 44.6-pounder wasn't in the pool. The Sea Hunter will run another such trip from 2:30 p.m. to dark next Tuesday by reservation. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant also had a hot Magic Hours bite on Tuesday with the smallest bass being 28 pounds. One was even caught on a popper. At Brielle, the Big Jamaica reported limit catches of small blues on jigs today. Capt. Joe Bogan got into a good shot of 4-pound fluke during Monday's all-day fluke trip of Jamaica II, and recorded many limits despite a lack of drift on a calm day. The Tuesday afternoon sea bass trip produced from four to 10 keepers a man. Though the volume still isn't there, Raritan Bay is producing some large fluke. At Atlantic Highlands, Capt. Ron Santee said Steve Napovier led off early with three large keepers up to a 6.9-pounder -- but ended up losing the pool to Bob Neilsen's 7.4-pounder. Capt. Ron Sr. had a 6.7-pound fluke, and there were others of 6.6 and 6.2 pounds. BEST WEEK TRIP EVER? - 26 Fish a Trip Average!" *************************************************20 Overnighters in the Books Before June 20 - Nice Start!************************************************** With one-fifth of the season over - as we've got 20 canyon trips in the books - we couldn't be happier to have the fishing we've had the past two weeks.  Just when we thought the first week of June would be the best fishing we'd see this early season last week topped it with 14 Big-eyes coming to the dock, 1 giant tuna and 183 bluefins in total and of course your random makos and blue sharks. We also saw many of our Canyon Runner Fishing Report Members cash in on their first big-eyes ever - bluefins over 70" and much more - Way to Go CR TEAM!Here's a quick run down of each trip - we started in the south west corner of the Hudson at the beginning of the week and quickly moved down into the Toms area.  Most of the action was in 300-500 fathoms and once again the Canyon Runner 6" Squid Bars and Mini-Mamba Bars were hot as well as Melton Jets and Joe Shutes with ballyhoo.Captain Deane Lambros with Mike Zajac and Kevin Muller working the pit definitely had the bluefins dialed in with a giant on one of his trips - the same trip with 70 other bluefins!  Deane also saw another trip with 47 bluefins and finally 4 big-eyes for the week. Specifically, Deane's groups produced the following:John Dale Charter - 11 Bluefins & 2 Big-Eyes - Saturday - SundayPeter Bradley Charter - 71 (Yes Seventy-One Bluefins Caught to 77" and 300 Pounds - Wednesday - ThursdayOpen Boat Charter - 2 Big-Eyes and 47 Bluefin - Tuesday Day Troll Captain Phil Dulanie with Capt. Ryan Britt in the pit were the big-eye slayers nailing 10 for the week - they also had their fair share of bluefins as well.Specifically, Phil's groups produced the following:John Hovanec Charter - 1 Big-eye and 6 BluefinsLuke McGee Charter - 1 Big-Eye and 1 BluefinPeter Torciecollo Charter - 1 Big-Eye and 20 Bluefins - Wednesday - Thursday7 Big-Eyes for 6 Heroes (not to mention 17 bluefin to 135 pounds) - Tuesday - Wednesday While I reported on that last trip with the Vets once already - it needs repeating.  Also worth noting is we took out several Navy Seals on Saturday and an ex-Delta Force leader for the Warriors for Warriors Tournament and put them into 16 blue sharks. Finally - and most importantly - we need all to wish for a great trip for the one that's out there right now as Carl from The Graham Company, a specialty insurance brokerage who provides outsourced risk management services to middle market companies donated 2 more FREE spots to a couple more Veteran's and they are trying to put a catch together as I type - let' wish them well! *********************************************** EMAIL: ADAM@CANYONRUNNER.COM IF YOU WANT A SPOT OR THE WHOLE BOAT You Better Call ASAP if interested: 732-272-4445
