Captain's Focus

There was still a big swell on the ocean today, but the weather outlook for fishing the rest of the week is pretty good. That big swell and dirty water after days of strong south winds plus last evening's downpour had a negative effect on both turnout and the fishing. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported only a pick of 2-to-4-pound blues by jigging, but conditions should be much better tomorrow. The Ocean Explorer from that port got started with fluking, and had only a pick of keepers plus shorts in 40-to-60-foot depths -- which was a good sign after days of big swells. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant was able to get out on their Magic Hours striper trip. Everything worked out well for Vinny D'Anton of Wall this morning. Though there were no stripers in Shark River, the water was clear despite the downpour last evening, and a big blue hit his Chug Bug. That 35-incher ought well, but was as skinny as they come -- looking like an early spring "racer" rather than a late spring blue. I had a big blowup on my popper while Vinny was fighting, but it never hit the plug -- and there was no more action. D'Anton decided to try the surf with bait before going home, and ended up in a hot bite that produced five stripers from 26 to 33 inches. He kept a 29-incher that had a little bit of everything in its stomach -- including pieces of clam and bunker, sand fleas, digested small herring or peanut bunkers, and a 5-inch sand eel.  The Brett T. Bailey Mako Rodeo, that was contested last weekend, still hasn't posted results.  Capt. John Kolias, of Reel Fun at Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, will be giving up his fluke secrets at the 8 p.m. meeting of the Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County in the American Legion, 33 West Passaic St., Rochelle Park. Non-members are welcome for a $5 fee that includes a 50/50 ticket and refreshments.
