Captain's Focus

The switch to light southwest winds should allow surf temperatures to rise over the next few days, but I can assure you that it was still frigid early this morning when I cast at Spring Lake. Worst of all, I didn't raise a thing to my popper. The forecast for the next few days features unusually calm seas which are ideal for offshore fishing.  There were good reports from Belmar party boats on bluefish. The Golden Eagle had a good jigging shot early today, and then some bigger blues in the afternoon. Miss Belmar Princess fished to the south the last two nights. Anglers who brought light spinning rods did best with the small blues Friday night. Most had limits Saturday night, and there were also some bonito. Jose Torres of Rockaway won the e pool with a 3-pound bonito. Both weekend mornings were good for blues, bonito and even the first small little tunny reported.  The cold ocean waters have had a negative effect on fluke fishing, but the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported they were limited by 11 a.m. Saturday with the two sea bass per man now permitted. At least everyone went home with a meal. The Prowler 5 from Atlantic Highlands was forced to fish in Sandy Hook Bay on Saturday due to the wind, but that's been poor so far -- so they returned to the ocean in better conditions today. The cold water slowed fluking, but sea bass were biting. An attempt to drift seven miles off was impossible due to a very fast drift, and the Apple Pie Grounds was unproductive. Some keepers were then boated off the Navy Pier. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reported some fluke were caught off the town beach before the life guards arrived. Island Beach State Park remains closed until the Legislature passes a budget. Mimi VI from Point Pleasant is running open for bottom fishing on both July 4 and 5. Call Capt. Kenny Namowitz at 732 370-8019 for a spot on the 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. trips.
