Captain's Focus

Dave Lilly of Hazlet has been busy working this spring, but that fluke pro slipped offshore Sunday morning and boated one of the very few doormats reported so far. That lump in he belly you see turned out to be a huge mantis shrimp hat Dave said  looked darn near like a lobster short with no claws .     1 Attached Images Though surfcasting wasn't any better this morning at Spring Lake than it was yesterday, there was a huge difference in the water temperature -- which had gone from frigid to pleasant overnight. Capt. Stan Zagleski had noted on Sunday that the bottom water temperature in 60 feet was only 52 degrees -- which was why they were catching ling in the ocean while fluking from Elaine B II out of Bahrs in Highlands. That situation should change with the west winds for anglers sailing on that boat at 6 a.m. Tuesday. Scott Leadbeater of Haddon Heights only caught one school striper among many big dogfish this morning in Raritan Bay from his Osprey out of Atlantic Highlands. He was surprised to see the Miss Belmar Princess come roaring into Sandy Hook bay in search of blues. However, the few he saw under picking birds were small -rather than the 5-pounders he caught there Friday afternoon. Miss Belmar Princess reported seeing schools of bunkers when they ran north this morning, but there were no blues in them. Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina that Shark River fluking has improved a bit, with a few limits being taken by rental boats. Party boats there are doing better in the ocean. Surfcasters plugging at night are doing best with stripers. The Jamaica from Brielle had some big blues Sunday on jigs -- topped by a 16-pounder for Chris Tuscai from Lansdale, Pa.
