Captain's Focus

The report of big blues to the east on Monday, didn't work out Tuesday when the Golden Eagle from Belmar ran 28 miles east where there were some readings but no blues responding to their chum. They did draw chub mackerel, until they were spooked by sharks. The afternoon trip produced good sea bass action. Capt. Ron Santee, of the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, said a wind against current situation today made for a poor drift, but a late spurt helped as some fares bagged two fluke -- and there was a 6-pound pool winner. Tank Matraxia and his crew from Lyndhurst joined Cap. John Contello on Just Sayin from Keyport for a good start to fluking on rough bottom off Monmouth Beach that quickly slowed in a lack of drift. There were only five keepers up to a 23 1/2-incher for the day plus a sea bass and a ling -- along with short sea bass and very few short fluke as Matraxia only put ALS tags in three. Vinny D'Anton managed to raise six fish to his Chug Bug in Shark River this morning, but only one was even hooked for a second. I only raised three to a Tactical Anglers Bomb Jr. popper -- and the only one that hit got off just as I started fighting it. D'Anton then tried the Spring Lake surf, but did nothing with stripers before switching to Gulp for seven short fluke up to 17 inches.
