Captain's Focus

After a period of rain plus east winds, weekend anglers should be able to enjoy fine weather with sunshine and light nor meeting in the Senior Citizens Buithwest winds even if the fish don't cooperate. The Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Fluke Tournament runs the next two days out of Atlantic Highlands Marina, and last minute entries are possible at tonight's 7 p.m. captains meeting in the Senior Citizen's Building at the marina. I'm sorry about the relatively short column today, but when I was writing it last evening there was lightning outside my window, and I published early in case the power went off and I wouldn't be able to make the deadline for the paper. I didn't get word of the jumbo bluefish jigging bite until after that. The Golden Eagle and Miss Belmar Princess were into blues in the upper teens north of Shark River Inlet. However, there have been no reports from the bluefish fleet today. There were also no fluke reports today, though Capt. Ron Santee of the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands said Thursday was the first day this season that he could call really good. There was lots of short fluke action plus a good shot at keepers. One angler caught 27 fluke that included three keepers up to the 5-pound pool winner. Capt. Stan Zagleski also noted a better keeper to short percentage that day on his Elaine B. II from Highlands. Vinnie D'Anton of Wall released both a 17 3/4-inch fluke on a shad, and a 32-inch "racer" blue on a Chug Bug in Shark River this morning.
