Captain's Focus

The northeast wind has kept most boats at the dock the last two days, but the Jamaica from Brielle had a good report from Monday's trip. Capt. Howard Bogan said bonito fishing has been the best in some time, and they were being caught in the chum line along with chub mackerel before little tunny suddenly took over the slick and provided the best day of fishing for them in years. Though winds are supposed to shift to the north and drop down on Wednesday, most boats probably won't be sailing into a rough ocean. Be sure to check with your skipper before making the drive. Joe Melillo at Castaways Tackle put his day off on Sunday to good use by fishing the Bay Head surf to release a 6-pound bluefish while losing another on the Run Off Sand Eel metal, Back at the shop, he weighed a 6-pound fluke caught in the ocean by Robert Skudera of Midland Park. Shark River was quiet this morning, but I managed a small striper on a Kettle Creek paddletail. Vinnie D'Anton came down later and stayed for the slack when he caught a small bass and had a flurry of cocktail blues.   Matt Slobodjian at Jim' Tackle in Cape May filed the following report: "We are still "catching plenty of fluke on the reefs. The bigger fish are concentrated on the structure so short drifts or holding the boat over the structure will be more productive. Long drifts are producing fish, but not many keepers. We were out a little further last Monday jigging around wrecks in the 85-110 ft. range. We did ok on fluke, but the best action was with nice sea bass. We had our limit and were throwing back 2-3 lb fish. There are still small blues and Spanish mackerel on the Five Fathom Bank and South Shoal on the troll with small spoons and lures. There weren't any reports this week of an inshore tuna bite and there haven't been many reports of dolphin around the pots either. The water has been pretty green inshore all season long.Offshore the boats are picking up more blue and white marlin this week. A lot of boats were fishing out in the deep of the Spencer and Wilmington canyons. Tuna have been really spotty in the canyons, with no concentration of fish anywhere. It's getting around the time when the offshore chunk bite starts coming on, but we're still waiting for the first good report. There has been a record amount of squid and tinker mackerel in the canyons this year which might explain why the tuna bite hasn't been great. In the surf, the croakers were at the Higbee"s Beach jetty in good numbers this week on worms and clams. The Point still has good numbers of fluke around the rocks, though most are small. Snapper blues are starting to show up in the surf all over the Cape and torturing anglers trying to fish for other species. Spot are showing up on the Wildwood Crest beach mixed in with kingfish. Spot are in closer to the beach, and the Kings are tending to be farther out.:
