Captain's Focus

The species that create great inshore angler interest at this time are either out of season (fluke & sea bass) or greatly restricted (one blackfish a day), but bottom fishing action for porgies, triggerfish and that one tog has been great -- while  chumming for bonito and chub mackerel provides fine surface action most days. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported "all you wanted" chumming today for bonito and mackerel along with some little tunny and bluefish. Both the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands and the Ocean Explorer out of Belmar had lots of porgies plus the single keeper tog today. The Big Mohawk took a couple of days off, but will be bottom fishing out of Belmar at 7 a.m. Thursday. Capt. John Contello had a mixed catch today on Just Sayin from Keyport with lots of porgies plus triggerfish and a big tog for all in the party. Shark River casting was slow this morning, though Vinny D'Anton caught two small stripers on the Storm Searchbait. Tommy Cox stuck with his fly rod and missed a bass on a popping bug. I had only one boil on a Pili Popper until just before leaving at slack water with the sun well up in the sky when D'Anton and I got a brief flurry of bluefish action on poppers that produced two 3-to-4-pounders for each of us plus several other raises. The Staten Island Tuna Club will be running a "friendly" weakfish tournament that will be catch-and-release with photos and measurements to determine winners.
