Captain's Focus

The Golden Eagle docked at Belmar today with the best party boat tuna catch so far as they had action for three hours that produced 20 yellowfin tuna up to 100 pounds plus a couple of albacore and a swordfish. They saw plenty of dolphin, but only were able to catch some. The Golden Eagle has room on their next canyon trip on Oct. 1, but will be fishing for blues, bonito and little tunny on Wednesday. Frank Criscola's Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club had a good trolling trip to Hudson Canyon on Sunday. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall was along as tuna were jumping and about 15 mixed yellowfins and albacore were boated. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar reported double-and-triple-headers of porgies, though blackfishing wasn't as good as the day before. Though the day started out damp and dreary, it got nicer later -- and the ocean was very nice.  Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst boated his personal best blackfish at 9 pounds as his party fished with Capt. John Contello on Just Sayin' from Keyport. Though not quite as good as their previous tog trips on that boat, they had good action in spurts. The big swell wasn't much of a problem because there's lots of space between waves which makes for a relatively gentle roll. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant was fishing for Mud Hole tuna today, but had very good jigging for blues on Monday along with chub mackerel while chumming -- plus some bonito and porgies. There was no repeat of the good bluefish bite that Vinny D'Anton of Wall experienced Monday morning in Shark River. He caught a 5-to-6-pounder on a Chug Bug at daylight, and I released a 4-pounder on a big pencil popper before D'Anton added a similar blue -- but that was it!
