Captain's Focus

With east winds still blowing up to 25 mph, there was a lack of boat reports today, but Capt. Jim Freda had a Facebook posting of him casting to llittle tunny, with Brian from Fisherman's Supply in Point Pleasant, that appeared to be off Manasquan Inlet. Fred Golofaro, editor of The Fishermen magazine Long Island edition, told me Thursday that there were many schools of little tunny off the eastern end of the south shore that could be headed for us. Capt. Vinny Vetere of Great Kills reported Tuesday that he saw lots of tunny off Coney Island. Capt. Chris Di Stefano had a tunny report from Shrewsbury Rocks. Surfcasters should keep an eye out for them as the seas decrease. Tank Matraxia's party didn't see any tunny today while running over to the Hudson River with Capt. John Contello on Just Sayin from Keyport. The Lyndhurst group limited on stripers up to 41 inches with eels, but Matraxia was upset that bass the wanted to tag were going belly-up in the warm waters. Ironically, I wrote in yesterday's column that wasn't happening when I fished in the same area on Tuesday with Chuck Many on Ty Man.  Our bass all shot out of our hands. Art Berkman of Pompton Plains eeled in the Hudson on Wednesday with Vitamin Sea out of Keyport to boat a 43-inch striper. The party boat fleet should be back in business on Saturday as winds shift to the south. The Golden Eagle from Belmar is chartered, but will be fishing open Saturday night and Sunday. I did nothing casting a popper in Shark River this morning, but Jim Louro of Spring Lake nailed a blue of about 5 pounds on a popper. I then fished Point Pleasant Canal on the slack for plenty of short blackfish up to 14 inches.
