Captain's Focus

It was a beautiful calm Sunday, and everything that floats was on the water -- with the resulting boat traffic tending to slow the striper bite. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands reported marking plenty of bass, but the bite was way off from Saturday when the very cold weather reduced the fleet though it didn't really interfere with fishing for party boat anglers. Some bass were caught today, but the Sea Hunter is looking forward to much better Monday with few boats on the water. The Golden Eagle from Belmar also complained about the boat traffic, but had a shot of keeper bass and lots of shorts. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant was an exception to the rule as they had their best fishing of the weekend with a mix of keepers, slots and shorts. The Angler from Atlantic Highlands had one drop fishing for porgies on Saturday, along with some tog on crabs and sea bass on both clams and crabs. They're not sailing Monday and Tuesday. Pete Connell of Avon got away from the big ocean fleets, and trolled outside of them where he marked lots of bait and caught a 44-inch striper on a Mo-Jo and another slightly smaller on a shad trolled on the surface. Surfcasters followed the several fleets, but there was no bird action around them and little sign of activity that might result in bass moving inshore. Mike Monte of Nantucket (a Belmar native) caught a small striper in the morning at Sea Girt, but that was it then -- and it was no better late in the afternoon. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported some school stripers in the dark on lures and on bait during the day. Martin Hitchner weighed a 37-inch surf bass on Saturday that hit bunker and went 16.55 pounds.  The Mimi VI from Point Pleasant will be running open Wednesday for sea bass. He fished with Mike Malvasio of Davie, Florida on Swallow the Leader on a trip to the Bahamas that produced 7 wahoo, 6 misty groupers, 5 queen snappers & several silky and yelloweye snappers.
