Captain's Focus

I noted in last night's blog that the hard southwest wind forecast for today might prevent a repeat of yesterday's scattered striper blitzes along the Shore. Yet, there was no wind this morning. Hundreds of anglers lined the surf, but there were no bunkers and virtually no bass reported. Those huge schools of bunkers weren't spotted from shore, and boaters never seemed to form up around schools. I never saw anything caught under what seemed to be ideal conditions until the SW wind came on hard later in the morning to discourage even the hard core. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant didn't do anything, but did hear of a few blues being caught even though choppers had seemed to disappear weeks ago. A boater at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant noted that blues had torn up his Mo-Jos yesterday as he trolled in 55 feet. The Miss Belmar Princess had a tough day Friday, but managed to jig some blues north of their inlet along with a few stripers. They're set to fish Sunday at 7:30 along with the Royal Miss Belmar, but the Golden Eagle from Belmar has cancelled for Sunday due to the hard SW wind forecast. The Raritan Bay fishery was also off as the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands reported short stripers with just two keepers and one bonus bass. That will probably change when the wind moves from south to west. After the weigh-in list at Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park was loaded with big bass yesterday, there were only a few bass today-- and nothing big. Yesterday's top surf snag & drop bass included a 51-inch, 53.35-pounder by Travis Tomensky, and a 43-inch, 34.9-pounder by Allan Kunze.
