Captain's Focus

Though snag & drop, casting and jigging for ocean stripers has been very spotty so far, trollers are catching large stripers regularly. Capt. Dave De Gennaro has been into them on his Hi Flier from Barnegat consistently while trolling Tony Maja bunker spoons and white mo-jos from the bathing beach at Island Beach State Park north to Lavallette. Despite the abundance of bunkers, the stripers seem to want trolled lures, as bucktail jiggng on the troll is also effective at times. Hi Flier is sailing open on days when De Gennaro isn't chartered, and those seeking a shot at a 15-to-30-pound or larger bass can call him at 732 330-5674. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands found birds right away today, but once again stripers under them were "wild" and difficult to hook. Despite all the obvious fish, only one keeper was boated while there was some action with shorts. The Jamaica II from Brielle has been doing very well wreck fishing for sea bass and porgies while a few cod and pollock are mixing in with them. Fuming Sun from Middletown, De. had a limit of sea bass last week plus 42 scup, and cod of 14.2 and 10.4 pounds. Bob Plaskett of Medford bagged a sea bass limit and 31 porgies. The Jamaica II schedule remains the same except that Wednesday trips depart at 3 a.m. for 14-hour efforts. Capt. Stan Zagleski reports that though blackfishing has been picky, there were good catches today on Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands.
