Captain's Focus

Today's northwest wind was up against the current most of the day, making for rough conditions and difficult jigging. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands provided the only report, and they were restricted due to the roll. A few keeper stripers were boated, and there were also some big blues and short bass. I was expecting wind and cold when I went to my local surf at dawn, but was happy to find a light NW wind and temperatures so mild that gloves weren't necessary. Mike Monte of Nantucket had caught seven small stripers in a row on a small shad before I got near him and released five up to 19 1/2 inches on a Tsunami Sand Eel and Castaways Super Teaser. Vinny D'Anton of Wall was also in on that short burst of action, and went back late in the afternoon to catch four more before it suddenly turned off again, The same sort of thing has been happening all along the Shore, but there have been no reports of bigger bass in the surf. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park didn't get any entries in their weekend kid's contest for a Tsunami gift package. Matt at Jim's Tackle in Cape May reports " We are finally starting to get some quality stripers showing up in the rips and on the inshore lumps (Wildwood and Stone Harbor Lumps). In the rips most of the fish are being caught on live eels, trolling stretch plugs or bucktailing. Out front on the lumps, most boats are trolling but some are dragging eels or snagging and dropping bunker if the schools of bait are thick enough. While it's not an all-out blitz, the fish being caught are 30-40lb class fish. The numbers of fish should improve as the schools move down the beach. There are still plenty of blackfish to be caught, but it sounds like they are moving out into deeper water wrecks in the 70-90 foot range. Sea bass are still there in good numbers on wrecks in the 100-120 foot depths. We have also had some good reports from the offshore rocks just inside the Wilmington Canyon The surf remains about the same -- lots of short bass and a few keepers, spiny dogfish, and an occasional speckled trout"
