Captain's Focus

While striper fishing in the ocean was spotty today, boats fishing the Raritan Bay area had lots of action with shorts as well as some keepers. Capt. Rob Semkewyc filed the following report from his Sea Hunter out of Atlantic Highlands: SEA HUNTER 11-29 STRIPER REPORT Today started like the past couple days, many areas of fish -- but they didn't stay hungry long. We had one good wack at them getting a keeper, a couple bonus fish and some shorts and big blues. We found another area with bunker and big fish splashing on top,  but we only managed one keeper out of that. Next we headed down the beach and caught some big blues and one striper. The one striper we did catch there had five others follow it up to the boat.We played with the blues for a little while then went searching for some more striper. We found them, but they were all shorts. All in all I can't say a good day, but I cant say bad either. We were into fish all day, but not enough keeper stripers caught. There is plenty of bait around bunker and also herring. It looks like we will be fishing for at least a couple more weeks. Tomorrow looks like another nice day. See you then, Capt. Rob   At Belmar, the Golden Eagle reported seeing stripers on top that wouldn't hit. They did catch some up to a 41-incher, but the readings indicated it should have been much better. Miss Belmar Princess picked some stripers east of the inlet, but ended up following birds to the north that put them into jumbo blues. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had a good day of jigging blues up to 13 pounds with some stripers mixed in. Jim Steel boated seven blues. That boat is chartered Friday. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park is extending their kid's contest until someone wins the Tsunami gift package. That's restricted to those 16 and under weighing in a bass or blue that was caught unassisted. The kids shouldn't feel bad about not being able to come up with a keeper because the pros haven't had a weigh-in at Grumpy's all week. Stripers are being caught, but they're all small. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant and Maren Toleno from Mantoloking got into small bass on metal at Brick, and Toleno also caught three very aggressive large herring on the heavy metal. The presence of large herring in the surf could attract the big stripers which have been missing so far. The Jamaica from Brielle has added a last tuna trip. at 9 p.m. Sunday. Reservations for the $335 fare can be made by calling 732 528-5014. The last trip produced both albacore and bluefins. The boat filled its limit of three under 47 inches and then released more.
