Captain's Focus

Capt. Vinny Vetere of Katfish Charters in Great Kills Staten Island sent the following report of Saturday's fishing in the Hudson River: "Had a great day Saturday with Dr. Sam, David and Gregg. Brian and Charles came along as mates. Gregg brought his son Anthony (6 yrs old) along as well. The bass were stacked and in no time we had 35 fish. Doubles and triples were the norm, all nice fish over 15 lbs. Home by noon. The fish were there again on Sunday & Monday as well. We are using our new Ho-Jo rigs which are a hybrid of the MoJo rig. Percy Wentworth & I designed a better mousetrap and had a machinist make us a custom mold. Our heads are power coated & baked. The main hook is not molded into the head, they are connected via a brass eye extruding from the head. Our shads are infused with Berkley Aliveand we have put rattles in the tails. Also, the shads have glued on 3D eyes. We can do all color combination along with any size weight. We use Percy's 100-lb non-kink mono that he uses on his nets for easy handling. Our rigs easily store onto a 7" wheel which is provided. The ends of the rigs have snap swivels which allow for quick color and weight changes on the fly. Extra shads are also included in the package. We will be sailing every day until Mother Nature says "Get Out". After the 15th we will depart from Liberty Landing, NJ. We are down to the wire." At Brielle the Big Jamaica had a successful Block Island trip for jumbo sea bass and will be running more on Saturday evenings to fish on Sunday. There will also be a Saturday offshore wreck trip for sea bass. They are leaving at 9 tonight to make a last canyon tuna trip. Call 732 528-5014 for details on all reservation trips. Capt. Ryan Bogan reports Jamaica II has been into good sea bass, porgy and ling plus some cod up to 14 pounds. Jerry Winston of Pennsauken had a limit of sea bass up to 5 pounds, 37 porgies and 14 ling. They have a Friday 12-hour Mud Hole wreck trip at 5 a.m. Small striprs are still in the surf in many areas. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant said it was picky this morning in Island Beach State Park as the northwest gale was blowing sand into the water and discoloring it. It had been much better the previous evening when Maren Tolano of Mantoloking caught a couple around 27 inches among all the small bass. Bob Correll of Bay Head fished his local beach in the afternoon fot five small bass on the Tsunami 6-inch Sand Eel. I only found two on the same lure during a brief try at Sea Girt, where the northwester had blown much of the water off the beach
