Captain's Focus

As noted in Wednesday's daily blog (nj.com /shore/blogs/fishing), Capt. Vinnie Vetere had lots of action with large bass while trolling his custom Mo-Jos in the Hudson River last weekend from Katfish Charters out of Great Kills. Vetere plans to continue chasing those bass as long as possible, but may move the boat to Liberty Landing in Jersey City. Vetere noted "We are making the new Ho-Jo rigs which are a hybrid of the MoJo rig. Percy Wentworth & I designed a better mousetrap and had a machinist make us a custom mold. Our heads are power coated & baked. The main hook is not molded into the head, they are connected via a brass eye extruding from the head. Our shads are infused with Berkley Alive. We have put rattles in the tails. Also, the shads have glued on 3D eyes. We can do all color combination along with any size weight. We use Percy's 100lb non-kink mono that he uses on his nets for easy handling. " Capt. Dave De Gennaro has had some good trolling for medium to large stripers with his Hi Flier out of Barnegat, and also got into 15-pounders last Friday by casting and jigging with shad lures. He's looking forward to warmer temperatures over the weekend , and will take reservations (732 330-5674) for open trips into next week. The Big Jamaica made the long run from Brielle to Block Island last Saturday evening to get into hot fishing for jumbo sea bass plus porgies and some cod on Sunday. Dung Nguyen from Fairfield, Va won the pool with a 15-pound cod.  The Big Jamaica will be making more of those Block Island trips on Saturday evenings. Call 732 528-5014 for details and reservations on them plus the far offshore wreck trips for sea bass. The Jamaica II has been doing very well on offshore wrecks, with limits of sea bass when weather conditions are favorable. Carl Brown had a sea bass limit plus 37 porgies and 11 ling on a recent trip. Fourteen-hour open trips will be run at 3 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Small stripers have been providing lots of action for surfcasters using the Tsunami 6-inch Sand Eel. Those bass are mostly from 14 to 20 inches, but I was surprised by a 26-incher Sunday in Sea Girt at dusk. David Cheli has been catching those small bass regularly in Spring Lake, and saw a keeper taken by another angler on an SP Minnow. However, when  he was using the SP and a teaser Wednesday evening there were bass on the surface that wouldn't hit at all. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant has been doing very well with small stripers in Island Beach State Park, but it was a little slower Thursday when I joined him in his beach buggy. However, when Maren Tolano of Mantoloking joined us she started hooking up steadily on the Tsunami Eel and was up to 23 when I left to get this column out -- more than the two male anglers combined.
