Captain's Focus

I didn't put a jinx on the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands today when I noted in last night's blog that that another big striper catch was almost a sure thing. Capt. Rob Semkewyc had a good crowd and and they all limited on keeper bass even though the slot fish were hard to come by among all the  10-to-16-pounders. The skipper estimated that over 300 keepers were released.  Harry Hunt won the pool with a 28-pound bass, and Rich Sloan had a 22-pounder. Unfortunately, the Sea Hunter will not sail Wednesday due to a forecast of strong northwest winds. Small stipers in the surf turned off quickly this morning. I released four and had two others on-and-off at Spring Lake on the Tsunami Sand Eel and Castaways Super Teaser before the bite ended all along the beach as soon as the sky turned red on the horizon. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant fished at Seaside and caught six bass right away before they also turned off. The Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands reported good blackfishing, after a tough Monday, with enough wind for good anchoring, but not as much wind as predicted. The Big Mohawk from Belmar reported lots of short tog,  but keepers for most and up to limits. They will sail at 7 a.m. Wednesday --  but at 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
