Captain's Focus

Capt. Stan Zagleski wasn't expecting much when he sailed his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands for stripers this morning, but he got into shorts and slots right away before looking for bass over 28 inches -- and limiting on them. He will make one more trip on the day after Christmas before the super cold arrives this week. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant reports surfcasting was very picky for small bass in a rough surf created by northeast wind at Island Beach State Park this morning, but conditions were fine Saturday there and in Seaside as Maren Toleno of Mantoloking released 54 bass and he added 29.  Ex-Assemblyman Guy Talarico reported about trips on his boat from Liberty Landing in Jersey City: I fished with my son Guy II and Ivan from Liberty Landing Marina on Friday. Beautiful day, no wind and flat seas. We caught nearly 40 stripers from 20 inches to 30 inches. The majority of the fish we caught were just under the size limit at around 26 inches. Lots of birds and surface action as we trolled stretch 25's between the Ambrose and Sandy Hook Channels. Also caught them on poppers, rubber shads and jigs. Crazy action. We went back out Saturday, this time with my son Alec. Sea conditions were totally different than the prior day, choppy waves to 3 feet , windy,  but we still found fish between the channels. Caught 13, but all shorts. There were lots of birds further out but didn't want to get beat up so we called it a day.  There was a lot of bait around, herring and adult bunker. Birds and stripers had a great time. Saw a huge swirl, maybe a tuna or a very large striper. Never surfaced to show itself.  Merry Christmas and a Fishy New Year to all my readers!
