Captain's Focus

After a promising Trip to Shark River Reef on Tuesday, the Ocean Explorer from Belmar was surprised to find the water temperature down to 37.5 degrees upon returning Friday. I spoke to ex Belmar skipper Mike Verges at today's Hi-Mar Striper Club flea Market, who said it was encouraging to see plenty of bergall and eel action on the bottom Tuesday -- along with a few blackfish, cod and pollock. However, on Friday there was little biting except a few spiny dogfish -- though he did jig a couple of mackerel and saw a nice tautog boated.   The Ocean Explorer was out today, but won't be fishing Sunday due to the wind forecast. The Hi-Mar event was very well attended, and the club ended up making money for the fishing trips they arrange for kids. I was happy to meet many of my readers in that crowd.  The Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County hold their Fishing Flea Market on Sunday in the Hasbrouck Heights VFW at 13 Veterans Avenue.  Visit www.swabc.org for details.
