Captain's Focus

Lou Grazioso of Wall had some unexpected good news today as he snagged a bunker in Red Bank while casting a jig just to make sure the fish he saw finning in the Shrewsbury were indeed bunkers. Those forage fish have been showing up early in Raritan Bay for several years, but stripers have always been weeks behind them. The first stripers will likely be caught first on clams after the season opens on March 1.  The Ocean Explorer from Belmar had a nice day on the ocean today, but an attempt to fish for tautog in shallower waters was offset by a roaring north current though they did get bergall bites on bottom. A move off to deeper waters produced a few short cod. They won't be fishing Sunday due to a forecast of strong winds, but will look ahead to getting out on mild days next week.
