Captain's Focus

Though striper fishing appears to be dead in N.J., Chuck Many of Annandale moved his Tyman from Highlands to Cape Charles, Va. for the big bass he pursues. With Nellie Greer of Bethlehem, Pa. and Barnegat striper pro Mike Greene aboard off the mouth of Chesapeake Bay on Monday they released stripers of 43, 40 and 37 pounds on live eels as all the action occurred in the afternoon. Many noted that bass in the fifties have been caught by other boaters fishing there -- and that's exactly what Greer did today on Tyman as he broke through the 50-pound barrier to release a 53-pounder. That was a big step up from the 48-pound bass Greer released in Raritan Bay this summer for a personal record. The crew also released stripers of 43, 42 and 37 pounds while missing one other hit. Capt. Stan Zagleski reported most of Monday's legal blackfish on his Elaine B. from Highlands were caught in shallower depths on green crabs, while shorts dominated in the depths. Catches ranged up to four or five keepers, with a 7 1/2-pound pool tog. Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marine that blackfish up to over 12 pounds are being caught offshore along with a few ling and sea bass -- plus dogfish. Surf striper fishing has been dead. Despite the good weather today, there were no positive surf reports. The Paramount from Brielle caught some cod and ling on Monday. They are running 10 1/2-hour trips for those species daily from 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
