Captain's Focus

While inshore fishing leaves much to be desired, sea bass fishing on far offshore wrecks has been holding up. Capt. Howard Bogan reports Saturday's fishing for sea bass and porgies on his Jamaica from Brielle remained very good. Harold Irving from Blakeslee, Pa. won the pool with a 15-pound cod, followed by a 10-pound pollock boated by Val Baschenko of Estelle Manor. The water temperature is 55 degrees out there, and fishing should hold up through the end of the season on Dec. 31. The Jamaica is sailing nightly at 10 to fish the next day. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations. Capt. Russ Binns ran his Mar-Lin from Toms River north to Elberon today and reported a dead sea with no bird life or bait readings. He finished up at the Axel Carlsen Reef, but that too was poor with only a few bergalls. Joe Melillo didn't have any better striper news at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant as his surfcasting report today was "nil". Capt. Stan Zagleski said he picked some keeper blackfish on his Elaine B. II from Highlands in shallower ares before getting more action but smaller tog in deeper waters. Catches ran up to four keepers.
