Captain's Focus

The gusty north wind blew down the coast today and made foor tough surfcasting conditions. Yet, that may seem good compared to the coastal storm predicted for Tuesday. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reported good Saturday action with short bass on small plugs plus a few on metal and bucktails. The Golden Eagle from Belmar has stopped striper trips, but will sail some offshore wreck trips for jumbo sea bass. Capt. Ryan Bogan had a small crowd aboard Jamaica II from Brielle on Saturday, and fished on some ling and cod drops that payed off. Dave Thomas of Philadelphia bagged 51 ling, five sea bass and two 10-pound cod. They will be sailing Wednesdays and Sundays on 12-hour trips at 5 a.m,; on Saturdays for 14 hours at 3 a.m.; and on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays for blackfish from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Matt Sloobodjian sent his last report of the season from Jim's Tackle in Cape May. Unlike in northern areas of the coast, thry've had some large stripers down there. Trolling of North Wildwood, Stone Harbor, and Corson's Inlet has been most productive, and Nick Ianello of Media, Pa. had a 33.5-pounder. Benjamin Harrison of Mullica Hill caught his first striper by casting a plug when bass came up -- and it was a 27.6-pounder. Some large bass have been hooked in the rips on Stretch 25 plugs and bucktails. The surf has been lacking in large bass. Blackfish have moved off to 65-to-85-foot depths. Sea bass are being caught in 130 to 180 feet, and out at the Rocks in 240 feet.
