Captain's Focus

The report from the Queen Mary out of Point Pleasant summed up today's striper fishing -- DISMAL. Capt. Rob Semkewyc knew he was in trouble with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands when charter boats leaving earlier found nothing. There was bait, and the water temperatures remain ideal for migrating bass. Yet, nothing was found as all areas that had been producing Sunday were checked out. The only semi-positive report was from the Golden Eagle out of Belmar as they managed one keeper bass and a few blues -- a far cry from Sunday's "insane" jigging. It was no different on the surf as a big swell from Monday's storm continued to pound on the beaches. I cast into rough waters at Mantoloking, where there was no life, and the current was roaring to the north. I had to be careful about the backwash that can knock over an angler and create a dangerous situation on a beach with no help around. Allen Riley and John Mazzeo from South Plainfield tried the surf at Sea Bright and experienced the same hopeless conditions. Riley says it's been the worst fall surf fishing he's experienced in many years. With a gale warning posted for Wednesday's storm, it's safe to say no one will be sailing tomorrow. The northeast wind could set up better fishing in improved weather later this week.
