Captain's Focus

It may seem strange at this time of year to say that canyon tuna fishing is better than inshore stripers and blues. Yet, the Jamaica from Brielle reported a weekend catch of 35 to 40 yelllowfins in the 20-to-40-pound class -- and a similar number of albacore that were bigger at 40 to 60 pounds. As a result, Capt. Howard Bogan is adding a canyon trip next Sunday evening. Call 732 528-5014 for info. The Jamaica is also leaving earlier for stripers this Monday to Thursday at 6 a.m. -- and has added an afternoon sailing from 2 to 8 p.m. those days The Shore has produced few stripers the last several days, but Capt. Rob Semkewyc ran east the last two days with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands.  There was lots of jigging action Saturday with big blues and short bass plus a 29-incher. Sunday was much slower, but he picked a few. . I ran to Atlantic Beach, N.Y. this morning with Dr. Dave Catalane on his big Boston Whaler from Manasquan to find both birds and bait, but no hits on jigs. The only fish we saw before an early departure was a single trolled bluefish. Back at the dock we were told that fishing off Island Beach was once again dead.  The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported making a long run to get into some keeper bass plus blues on Saturday, but on Sunday it was mostly shorts and many fewer blues.
