Captain's Focus

The Jersey Coast Anglers Association holds its annual Sportsperson-of-the-Year dinner on Sunday afternoon at 4 in Crystal Point Yacht Club, Point Pleasant. Tickets are $75, and can be obtained at the door.  The ocean was nice, and it wasn't too cold for November, but all the reports I've received were negative. Capt. Russ Binns of Toms River ran south from Manasquan Inlet with his Mar-Lin, and saw about 200 boats during the day without a single bent rod among them. The bunker schools were missing, and when he finally managed to snag a few there were no takers. My son Michael was also down there with a friend, and had a similar report. Nothing has been posted by the party boats, which probably tells you all you have to know about their results.  Surf reports were also bleak, but there was one positive report from Dave Lilly of Hazlet who got into loads of big bluefish in the middle of Raritan Bay while trolling Tony Maja bunker spoons. Lilly was amazed to see them so thick in 52 degree waters. He eventually managed to troll a few stripers in the teens by getting away from the choppers.  The best news from Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park is that the north jetty in Island Beach State Park is finally open. Vaughm Kelly beached a 29 3/8-pound striper on an SP Minnow in the park a couple of days ago. That's the largest of the fall so far at the shop.
