Captain's Focus

It's not over yet in the canyons -- if you can get out there. Capt. Howard Bogan reported it was very slow Friday night on his Jamaica from Brielle, with only a swordfish lost, until tuna turned on at 4 a.m.  As many as five at a time were fought. Rob Finkle from Sparta boated three tuna. Bogan cancelled the Saturday night trip due to the strong NW wind, but has room on upcoming trips. There were some good reports from Saturday's sea bass opener. The Jamaica II from Brielle had some limits plus a few porgies and triggerfish -- and did even better Sunday. Leif Pettersen took a day off from surfcasting, and his group of five fished aboard the Sea Soda out of Point Pleasant on Saturday for 50 legal sea bass, three tog up to 5 pounds, a porgy, and an Atlantic mackerel -- while releasing four fluke.  Capt. Joe Massa tried chunking in the back of Raritan Bay Sunday morning with his My III Sons from Morgan Marina. It was fishable with the NW wind and ebb tide together, but there was only one missed hit -- and blackfishing at the rock piles was no better for Nicky Guido of Staten Island and I. The northwest wend should clear and calm the surf. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports small blues are still abundant in that area.
