Captain's Focus

While there have been lots of small blues in the Seaside to Island Beach State Park area, only a few were being caught north of there until Thursday. Today those small blues were in many areas south of Manasquan Inlet, feeding on schools of small rainfish close to the surf. Mickey Sweeney of Howell said anglers could catch all they wanted on metal in the morning at Mantoloking. The blues popped in and out all day. Bob Correll of Bay Head got into them locally late in the afternoon, and I got there just before they shut down at dusk. There were a few hickory shad in the area, and those I caught were larger than the blues.  Unfortunately, a shift to a NE wind is forecast for the weekend which could change that fishery. Leif Petterson was joined at Deal this morning by Colin Archer of the Average Angler blog, but their flies didn't lure any stripers even though there were rainfish and peanut bunkers in the surf. The run of blues up to 18 pounds in the Mud Hole area continued today for the Golden Eagle from Belmar and the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant.
