Captain's Focus

If anyone did well with fluke on the last day of the season they weren't bragging about it. Capt. Stan Zagleski, of Elaine B. II from Highlands, admitted going out with a whimper as only a couple of keepers and a few shorts could be located today. Elaine B II will be sailing for porgies and the one blackfish per man allowed on Sunday at 7 a.m. Other fluke boats may be bottom fishing or taking a few days off before trying for stripers. Check with your favorite skipper.  Bob Matthews told me this morning that his rental boat customers at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina on Friday were blanked in Shark River. Party boats there are beginning to sail canyon tuna trips that are mostly sold out. Just before the storm he weighed a 19-pound party boat bluefish, but was told it lost the pool to a 22-pounder. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, is trying to keep up with the demand for green crabs being used to catch blackfish in Point Pleasant Canal. Gerald Cece plugged a couple of small stripers locally in the dark, but said there were no hits after daylight. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had a pick of big blues, which was a good sign after the storm.
