Captain's Focus

It was far from good fishing, but there were some large fluke today in Ambrose Channel. I joined Dave Lilly of Hazlet on Walt Wojcik's Cobia, Nancy Lee from Lentze Marina. Drummer Les Sayek and Wojcik had an early hot hand as they combined for four fluke from 4 to 7 pounds. However, other than that there were only two shorts, a small sea bass, and a snagged small sea robin as there seemed to be hardly any life on the bottom that's usually full of shorts and "trash" fish. Lilly, who won or placed in most of the summer fluke contests, couldn't find a keeper, but hooked into the "big one" that turned out to be a green turtle. The Elaine B II from Highlands was in the same area and had some large fluke. Bill Boyko of Lake Shawnee had four up to the pool-winning 7 5/16-pounder. The Tackle Box in Hazlet had a Saturday weigh-in of a 13 3.4-pound fluke caught by Michael Stratton of South Amboy in Ambrose on a Spro tipped with a Gulp Grub. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported a pick of 8-to-12-pound blues on bait. The NW wind forecasted for Monday should start knocking down the big swell.
