Captain's Focus

Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst said there was plenty of action as he fished today in Swash and Sandy Hook channels with Capt. Kevin Cole out of Brown's in Keyport. The boat total was 15 keepers, and Matraxia also put ALS tags into 40 shorts. There were no large fluke, but the bay produced three over 9 pounds this week that were weighed at the Tackle Box in Hazlet. By far the largest was a 14-pounder taken on Gulp in Sandy Hook Channel by Chris Chomka of Hazlet. Dale Schwartz of Pottstown, Pa. had a 9 1/2-pounder in Ambrose Channel, and Don Plath from Hazlet boated a 9-pound fluke in the Reach. The Jamaica II from Brielle had a hot fluke bite on Labor Day while fishing wrecks  in the ocean. There were many limits and 4-to-7-pounders. Nick Demuro of Philadelphia took the monthly lead with a 7 3/4-pounder in his limit catch. The surf was down, and conditions were better this morning at Sea Girt, but I couldn't raise a thing on a popper after having released a short striper yesterday morning. Mickey Sweeney of Howell caught three on sand fleas at Spring Lake. Allen Riley of South Plainfield fished the new public access at Sea Bright, and had a pick of cocktail blues on the Tsunami Slimwave metal. However, there were no snappers, and Gulp wasn't attacked by any of the expected fluke.  Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, weighed a 10 5/16-pound doormat for Kirk Williams of Cherry Hill, who caught it on the Capt. Cal. One boat fishing Shark River on the weekend had four keeper fluke among many shorts.
