Captain's Focus

It's almost all over but the shouting in Cape May as the MidAtlantic Tournament is coming to an end.  Lady Luck lived up to its name by weighing a 586-pound blue marlin for second place in that division, and Fish On became the wahoo leader with 65-pound entry. Several boats weighed in white marlin up to 72 pounds, but weren't close to the two 80-pounders taken yesterday on Billfisher for second and third. I'll have the final results later tonight. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported big blues didn't cooperate for long today, though some 8-to-12-pounders were taken primarily on bait. I made a brief attempt at surfcasting in Bay Head this morning after walking down and finding the seaweed had returned. Betty & Nick's in Seaside Park heard from a customer who said there was some grass in the Island Beach State Park surf, but caught several small blues and a short striper on bait at the north end. Capt. Lou Grazioso of Wall fished Thursday with Ed Pierce on Fish Whistle out of Seaside Park as they trolled three yellowfin tuna and baited five others in the Chicken Canyon area.  Captains Kevin Gerrity and Dave Bender had  Christian Iancu of Fort Lee out last Sunday with his wife and daughter for an overnighter on Jenny Lee from Manasquan, but were able to stop short and chunk nine yellowfins to 60 pounds.
