Captain's Focus

It appears that the sudden return of big bluefish is for real. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had another good day with 10-to-14-pounders -- and added both a dolphin in the 20-pound class plus pollock of 20 and 30 pounds. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant also had a report of big blues on Sunday. Fluking wasn't nearly as exciting today in Raritan Bay when Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst ran his annual charter for family and friends on the Mariner from Atlantic Highlands. There was little drift in the morning, but it did improve in the afternoon Jeff Demint and his American Littoral Society crew were aboard to tag shorts of 14 inches or more. They put 40 tags in fluke plus one in a small blue for the 27 anglers -- and nine legal fluke were boated. Marty Gras of Lyndhurst had a 25-inch 6-pounder, and there was also a 24-incher. Though fishing wasn't good on long drifts, the kids had a great time as they shouted out the slogan on Matraxia's shirt -- Shut up and fish! Capt. Stan Zagleski said the lack of drift also made for slow fluking on his Elaine B II from Highlands, but action improved with the afternoon wind. Sam Ingalinesi of Pompton Lakes took the pool at 5 11/16 pounds.
