Captain's Focus

Friday's Ristori Report included a mention from Fisherman's Supply in Point Pleasant of a very unusual daytime yellowfin tuna chunking bite in Lindenkohl Canyon. That's something which usually doesn't occur until very late summer, long after there's been good night chunking. Capt. Lou Grazioso confirmed that yesterday when he ran out to the Lindenkohl  on Bob Chervanak's Lady Dorado from Waretown. They had a hard time getting hits from fussy yellowfins, but dropped to 40-pound leaders and small chunks to catch seven.  By the way, the school bluefin catch Grazioso reported in the last Ristori Report was actually made with Chervanak on Mike De Marco's Tito's Express from Rumson -- rather than on Lady Dorado.  Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall is back from fishing aboard Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club at the White Marlin Open in Ocean City, Maryland. He said canyon fishing was the worst he's experienced in a long time as they released only one white marlin in three days. The best reports they had were from the Lindenkohl, but that was just barely out of the range allowed in the contest. I'm still trying to get complete official results from that contest. The billfish numbers were 411 white marlin releases and three weighed (two under the 70-pound minimum: 30 blue marlin releases with four weighed; one spearfish release; and six sailfish releases. There were 288 boats, each fishing three days, which averages out to about half a billfish per trip. There were also some tuna, but they weren't abundant. Even dolphin were few, and just two wahoo were weighed.   At Brielle, the Jamaica II had its best half-day fluking trip of the season Saturday morning. Capt. Ryan Bogan reported many limits including 3-to-5-pounders.  The best bet was the 4-inch Gulp Swimming Mullet with the lightest jig that would hold bottom. The Jamaica is resuming night bluefishing trips now that some big blues have been reported. Take a look at the Supermoon tonight, and wonder what affect that will have on tomorrow's fishing. There was good news in the surf today when I fished Bay Head and found the weed was gone -- and there were plenty of hickory shad around sun-up. I released 11 on a fly teaser that they really hammered. All were in the 16-to-17-inch class except for a smaller one that instead hit the much larger Tsunami Slimwave metal.      I also released two small fluke on Gulp, and saw the first cownose ray landed by another angler. Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park also reported those rays showing up in the surf. They also noted that 1-pound blues were hitting early at Gillikin's in the park. Capt. Dave Riback reported another hot day of jigging small blues plus bonito from his Queen Mary out of Point Pleasant.
