Captain's Focus

There wasn't a great deal of change as 170 boats fished the last day of the White Marlin Open at Ocean City, Md. However, there was one really big fish as Ronda's Osprey weighed a 723.5-pound blue marlin that barely missed the first place blue of 738.5 pounds taken by Gratitude earlier in the week. The leaders going into the last day sweated it out, and were successful -- especially white marlin winner Dream Time with a payout of $1,287,411. I'll have all the standings when everything is official on Saturday. Striped bass fishing was dead this morning, when I fished with Capt. Hans Kaspersetz and Tony D'Anna on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands.  The Raritan Bay area that had been producing bass was loaded with big smooth dogfish. I went out again in the afternoon with Chuck Many of Annandale on his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands along with Nellie Greer from Bethlehem, Pa. Only a couple of dogfish were caught where we had been catching bass, but Many looked around at some of his other spots and we ended up releasing seven stripers on live bunkers and eels up to one in the 20-to-25-pound clss by Greer. I finished up by releasing a 16 1/2-inch bluefish that got involved with my 8/0 circle hook without harming the eel. The fluke fleet was fishing down the beach with the northwest wind that provided an ideal drift off the beach The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported very good fishing for pee-wee blues plus mackerel and bonito.
