Captain's Focus

Just as yesterday, it was one of those "all you want" days for pee-wee blues plus chub mackerel on the Golden Eagle from Belmar. Some bonito were mixed in as anglers caught on bait or jigs and teasers.  The big swell from the offshore storm didn't bother that fishing, but it wasn't comfortable for surfcasting. I fished at Bay Head, where the seaweed wasn't quite as bad as it had been. I had a fish on for an instant and a strike at the surface while casting metal and a teaser but am pretty sure both were hickory shad. Mickey Sweeney of Howell stopped at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant where he reported the surf at Avon had been calm and clean when he caught short fluke and a sea robin Tuesday on Gulp, but wasn't very fishable today.  Allen Riley of South Plainfield took his granddaughters to Sandy Hook om a calm Tuesday morning, and watched then catch countless snappers on light tackle with a Snapper Popper. His son Kevin, from N.C. also caught seven short fluke on a white Gulp 4-inch Swimming Mullet while daughters Kaitlyn (10) and Gillian (8) kept the snappers busy along with Sorrenta Riley (8) from Pa. Allen only managed one short fluke himself. The White Marlin Open at Ocean City, Md. was still waiting for a million dollar marlin as this was being written. A 67-pound white fell short of the 70-pound minimum yesterday, as did a 64-pounder today. The dolphin category was turned upside down as Trophy Hunter blew everyone on the leader board away with a 38-pounder. The scales are still open, but I'll do an additional blog later tonight with the rest of the weigh-ins.
