Captain's Focus

Weigh-ins during the first day of the White Marlin Open at Ocean City, Md.are continuing as this is being written. The Pez Machine, out of Barnegat Light, won the tuna division of the recent White Marlin Invitational out of Beach Haven, and they followed up this afternoon with a double of bigeyes. The first was a 178-pounder boated by Mark Ritter of Wall to move into third place -- but the second was just a bit better at 180 pounds -- caught by an angler from Voorhees that sounded like Ray Marmara on the Marlin Cam I was watching. The top two tuna mere barely larger -- a 183.5-pounder on Constant Threat, and a 182 on Plane Simple. The Viking 62 won the gig money at the White Marlin Invitational, but today they weighed the dolphin leader at 21.5 pounds. Generation weighed an 52.5-pound white marlin, and there was a big disappointment when Plastered weighed a 454.5-pound blue marlin that fell short of the 500-pound minimum.  If there are any late changes I'll add a blog later tonight. There are 288 boats entered, and the purse is $2.77 million. The boats fish three out of five days. With great weather on the first day, 263 boats opted to fish. Closer to home, Capt. Stan Zagleski reported there was wind against tide in Raritan Bay, but fishing turned hot in the last hour when the south wind came up. Tony Salamone of Woodbridge won the pool by ounces at 6 5/16 pounds. I was upset to find there was still weed in the Bay Head surf. It wasn't thick, but the rig had to be cleaned off every cast. Mickey Sweeney of Howell, said he found the same thing yesterday at Spring Lake -- and went south to Lavallette today where the weed was even worse.
