Captain's Focus

Dave Lilly of Hazlet (who won last Saturday's Pt. Pleasant Elks Fluke Tournament) and Charlie Parker of Oceanport braved some miserable weather this morning to catch five big fluke in Ambrose Channel that stood up to win the Leonardo Fluke Masters Tournament. Participation was down due to the weather, and some entrants may not have fished since they thought the contest would be postponed -- though wind wasn't a problem and there were no small craft warnings inshore. The winning five-fish total in the 50-boat contest was 35.59 pounds, which included a couple of "nines". Vincent Fahrion was a very close second with 35.12 pounds.James Viola of South Amboy was third at 33.58 pounds. Nelson Roman of Matawan took fourth with 32.98 pounds, but had the big fish with an 11.35-pound doormat The Golden Eagle from Belmar caught some small blues early, but reported a 30 knot wind came up and chased them home. Surfcasters fishing in the Bay Head area are hoping that the waters will clear up again after weed returned on Friday. I was fortunate to make one long cast that resulted in an instant strike on the teaser from a hickory shad that morning, and also lost another, but it was almost impossible to fish through the weed that had to be cleaned off every cast. The big game fleet is gathering at Ocean City, Md. for the White Marlin Open that payed out over $1.2 million last year.  I'll have updates during the week on the Monday to Friday contest.
