Captain's Focus

The pee-wee bluefish bite continues at a hot pace. The Jamaica from Brielle reports limits for all today plus a few bonito. They read lots of blues, and saw some on the surface. The Jamaica will be adding 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. trips starting Sunday, and continuing from Monday through Wednesday by reservation.  Night sailings will be only on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. There was a big improvement in drift for Raritan Bay flukers. Capt. Stan Zagleski said most of the keepers caught on his Elaine B. II from Highlands were quality fluke from 4 to 6 pounds. Tiny Goldman of Brick bagged four up to a 6 1/16-pounder that tied for the pool with Carmine Rutledge from Newark. Both bucktail and bait rigs worked well. Surfcasting in the Point Pleasant-Bay Head area remains almost impossible due to all the weed in the water that's been the worst in memory.  Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant is most enthused about the crabbing. He says there are some bass, blues and blackfish in the canal. Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park reports a 3 1/4-pound fluke beached this morning by Anthony Seatore, who had a total of six along with his buddy. Grumpy's Tackle in that town weighed a 31-inch, 8.25-pound bluefish that Scott Williamson caught Monday on a popper -- the first popper-caught and large blue taken in some time. The Beach Haven Marlin & Tuna Club runs their annual White Marlin Invitational this week. For the first time it's possible to fish that contest out of any inlet from Manasquan to Cape May. Last minute registration is possible at Wednesday's captains meeting in the Beach Haven Clubhouse from 5 to 8 p.m. For info call 201 376-5552, or 609 685-4130.
