Captain's Focus

It was altogether too nice today for fluking in Raritan Bay. Capt. Stan Zagleski of Elaine B II from Highlands said there was no wind at all and very little current all day, making for tough fluking. Those jigging Spros tipped with Gulp did best, and the high hook managed four keepers. Karl Faller of East Hanover took the pool with a 5 13/16-pounder. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had no such problem with pee-wee blues today as there were limits for all plus a better showing of bonito on jigs. Also at Belmar Marina, Bob Matthews reports from Fisherman's Den that Brian Kean of Yardley, Pa. had a 4 1/4-pound fluke over the weekend from a rental boat, while Tom Mibail from Newton boated fluke of 3 and 6 1/2 pounds from a rental. Matthews got out in one of his boats to catch fluke with Tony Saunders who boated a 4-pounder on a jig head with Gulp. Capt. Ryan Bogan said he had good fluking last week on Jamaica II from Brielle, but it was slower over the weekend -- especially in Sunday's strong current. Bob Brave of Philadelphia had a limit to a 6 1/2 pounder that became the monthly pool leader. Some sea bass are mixed in. The Canyon Runner fleet out of Clarks Landing in Point Pleasant had good yellowfin tuna trolling in Hudson Canyon as 55 up to 85 pounds were boated in four trips. They also had reports of other boats catching yellowfins by chunking at night. Capt. Hans Kaspersetz fished with Tom Morford Jr. on Saturday as they trolled from Morford's Black Jack out of Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands at Monster Ledge and the Glory Hole. There were none of the tuna sought, but a couple of dolphin were boated.
