Captain's Focus

Veteran striper pro Gene Graman of Middletown got in on the unusual mid-summer striper bite in Raritan Bay this morning with his That's It from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands . Jerry McMenamy worked hard with a cast net to accumulate enough bunkers for chunking, and Graman anchored on readings that produced a steady bite of bass from  about 15 pounds to a 35-pounder that Graman released. We ended up catching at least 25 - and only three dogfish. Though pee-wee blues had been abundant the day before, the Golden Eagle from Belmar reported that jigging was a lot slower today. Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst fished for fluke on Deep Down from Keyport, and tagged 17 shorts. He couldn't hook a keeper as they fished from the back of the bay out to the Tin Can Grounds, though some legal fluke were boated by others.  Capt. Jim McFarland fished through 35 mph south winds plus rain with his Big Mac from Green Harbor, Ma. last week to put the Bill Grimes party from Wayne into 98 whiting up to 3 pounds plus over 200 redfish up to 4 pounds.
