Captain's Focus

Just as was the case last Tuesday, Chuck Many of Annandale had no information to go on in his search for striped bass today -- but he was confident he'd find them with his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands in one of his many favorite spots from Raritan Bay to the Rockaways. As it turned out, he sotted marks at his first stop and we were able to pick bass from among large smooth dogfish while chunking bunkers until we left them biting when thunder storms closed in on us by early afternoon -- by which time the release count was up to 18 bass. Though there weren't any 40-pounders, as was the case last week, Many did weigh a 30-pounder on his IGFA-certified Boga Grip. We also released at least 10 dogfish, and I had Many weigh one of mine that pulled the scale to the 20-pound mark. Not bad for summer striper fishing in N,J. -- especially considering how poor striper results have been in New England.   Capt. Stan Zagleski once again decried the gloom and doom forecast that kept even some of his regulars on Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands at home. Just as yesterday, it was calm and dry in the morning, with no rain until they reached the dock. It was also a good day for those working Spro and Gulp rigs for fluke in a slow drift. Tiny Goldman of Brick bagged four up to 4 pounds, and Dominick Marcantonio from East Hanover also had four keepers -- including a pool-winning 8 5/8-pounder.
