Captain's Focus

Fluking was generally tough today, but Dave Lilly of Hazlet reports he hit one hot spot that produced several large fluke up to a 6 1/2-pounder that put him on the board in the Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Fluke Tournament. Since that contest has a second day on Sunday, nothing has been settled in the 116-boat tournament. However, Lilly noted that it won't be easy to knock off Joe Fischler's 12-pound doormat. Capt. Johm Kolias found fluking from his Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands to be very tough for the Dick Toto party as the fluke they caught came up wery cold. Dave Lilly also mentioned the cold bottom waters being a problem today.  Capt. Stan Zagleski said fluking was better for him in Raritan Bay after two tough days, but there was a lack of drift early before the afternoon wind changed that. Frank Lavelle of Jersey City hit a 6 7/8-pound fluke on the head right away, and was leading all day until his wife, Anne, took the pool away from him on the last drift with a 7 1/4-pound fluke. After one brief flurry a few weeks ago, pee-wee blues showed up again to provide limit catches off the Shore on jigs. The Jamaica from Brielle reported the fish weren't far from that town. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had some passengers catching 30 to 40, and it was the same for the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant -- though only 15 can be kept. That fishing was a contrast to the sharking Matt Feeney and I experienced as we fished with Tom Morford Jr. on his Black Jack out of Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands. A long drift from the west side of the Mud Hole almost to the BA Buoy only produced one small brown shark -- though we had several other strikes that weren't followed up. The lack of morning wind didn't help, but we did have a 1-knot drift due to Mud Hole current. We saw a few sharks, including a small hammerhead that hung around for some time. Capt. Jim McFarland did a combination trip Friday on his Big Mac from Green Harbor, Ma. that produced school bluefin tuna of 72, 86 and 112 pounds before a switch produced 250 bottom fish.  Two reports I received indicated that few yellowfin tuna were caught today in Hudson Canyon. 24th annual Raritan Bay Anglers Charity Fluke Tournament will be held on Saturday July 19 out of Perth Amboy Harborside Marina Sign ups will be at The Moose Club 989 Convery Blvd. Perth Amboy 08861 on Thursday July 17 Look for the giant American Flag.
