Captain's Focus

I usually don't write about the upcoming weather because the NOAA reports are so undependable. However, yesterday's report was remarkable because there wasn't any wind over10 mph predicted through Tuesday. Just a few hours after passing along that good news I went surfcasting at Point Pleasant this morning into a 15-to-20-mph northeast wind that had flags standing straight out. That made working a popper difficult, so I switched to metal and was pleasantly surprised by a hit that turned out to be my first fluke of the season. If I was at Island Beach State Park, that 16 1/2-incher on a teaser would have been a keeper. Mako Mania results haven't been posted yet, but Capt. Danny McGivney reports that 19 makos were weighed the first day.. The largest was a hard-to-beat 308 pounds, while a 188-pounder in 6th sets a floor for determining keepers tomorrow. The Golden Eagle reported poor bluefishing the last two days, especially in today's unexpectedly strong wind. The Friday Magic Hours trip was also slow as only one striper was boated. Capt. Stan Zagleski had to fight wind against ride conditions while fluking with his Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands, but it improved after noon. Melissa Thomas of Mullica Hill had three keepers up to 5 9/16 and 5 11/16 pounds. Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst joined an open trip Capt. Kevin Cole was running Friday afternoon on the Down Deep Bullet, and got off to a great start as he cast off the bow of the boat at Brown's in Keyport to catch a 21-inch fluke. He couldn't beat that when they fluked off Coney Island, though the five rods totaled 11 keepers. Matraxia tagged 15 fluke, bringing his total number of ALS tags applied to 2,500.  Capt. John Kolias, of Reel Fun at Twin Lights Marinain Highlands, congrarultes his relief skipper, Capt. Marc Devino, after he teleased a 73-pound black drum that hit a live bunker he was fishing from his own boat Wednesday evening while seeking stripers. Capt. Fred McFarland, of Big Mac at Green Harbor, Ma., put the Gary Dzama party from Edison onto hot jigging for 30-to-34-inch pollock plus cod -- and a porbeagle shark was lost at the boat.
