Captain's Focus

Anglers couldn't be looking at a much better forecast than what NOAA is putting out today, as there's hardly a mention of any wind over 10 mph right through Tuesday. That's good for everyone but the sharkers competing tomorrow in Mako Mania -- as some wind for drifting is very important in that sport. When confronted with that problem, I usually fish areas where currents are strong -- such as the Mud Hole,  especially at Monster Ledge. There were mixed results on the striper front today, but it certainly wasn't a good one for Chuck Many of Annandale on his Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands as Matt Calabria of Hazlet, Nellie Greer from Bethlehem, Pa. and I joined in releasing only three stripers. That would be a poor day for Many even during August when most anglers believe "there aren't any stripers around". Jigging for fluke as we were drifting bunkers for stripers also was no good. Calabria and Many had lots of action doing that on Monday as they caught four legal fluke and three sea bass while releasing many dogfish and short fluke. Calabria couldn't hold bottom with a pound of sinker this morning in Sandy Hook Channel, and only caught a small sea bass. The results weren't much better with a slower drift in the afternoon, and just two smooth dogfish were released. Many stayed for the hoped-for evening striper blast off Sandy Hook, but I never saw a "blow-up" of bunkers, and only one bass was hooked before he decided to return prior to dark. Capt. Joe Massa kept looking with his My Three Sons from Morgan Marina and got into a last minute blast.  Capt. Sal Cursi earlier reported a 50-inch striper that hit a bunker on Shenanigans from Morgan Marina. Capt. Howard Bogan reported getting into a shot of big stripers in the morning with his Jamaica  from Brielle. Several were caught, including a 40-pounder for Woody Atley (87) of Oxford, Pa. Bluefishing was slow in the morning, but picked up in the afternoon.  Capt. Stan Zagleski said a wind against tide situation made fluking tough on his Elaine B II from Highlands, but some large keepers were boated. Dave Brink of Middletown won the pool with a 4 5/8-pounder.
