Captain's Focus

Though I was a little late getting to the surf this morning, that seemed to work out as I hooked a doubleheader of 5-to-6-pound bluefish after just a few casts into blank waters at Point Pleasant. The next cast produced another blue on the Tactical Anglers Bomb Jr. popper, and another angler arrived just in time to put on a popper and catch one before getting it cut off. I only raised one more fish before the action was over. Back at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, I talked to another angler who had been at the very spot where I scored and was long gone without a bump before I arrived around sun-up. It's not often that being a little lazy pays off in surfcasting! Yet another cobia has been recorded from the surf since Terry Martuscelli's 42-pounder hooked Saturday evening. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park weighed a 42.5-inch, 27.1-pounder on Monday for Mike DiSalvo, who hooked it on bunker. Flies were bad at the south end of the park, but better at the north end. Both Grumpy's and Betty & Nick's reported pods of bunker close to the beach on Tuesday from Lavalette to South Seaside Park. At least one angler snagged a bunker and had a bass on before losing it. Yet, Betty & Nick's ended up weighing its two largest surf bass of the season yesterday on bunker. Nick Chirico of Manalapan brought in a 27-pounder, only to be pushed back by the 34 1/4-pounder by Rony Kaamino of Toms River at Area 7. Bluefish were hitting in the southern areas surf, but the party boat bite to the north was slow. After several good days, the Golden Eagle from Belmar was surprised to find a tough pick despite good conditions. Also at Belmar Marina, Bob Matthews says his rental boats have had plenty of fluke action in Shark River -- including some limits. Fluke fishing is even better offshore, where Jesse Thomas limited on squid and spearing.   Capt. Stan Zagleski was able to fish different areas with his Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands, and had better fluke catches for those who worked hard. Bill Powell from Wyomissing, Pa. won the pool at 5 11/16 pounds by an ounce over John Talbott of Jersey City. Joe Salemo from East Hanover had four up to 5 5/16 and 4 13/16 pounds.
