Captain's Focus

NOTE: Following is the Tuesday night blog which I've been informed didn't actually publish. Bob Chervanak of Fairfield ran his new Scout 32 from from Waretown out to Lindenkohl Canyon on calm Monday, and found good trolling for yellowfin tuna. Capt. Lou Grazioso of Wall was with him as six yellowfins were hooked, with four in the 40-to-60-pound class being boated. Grazioso said a bigger tuna (probably a bigeye) crushed a spreader bar and was lost. He noted there were lots of turtles in the warming waters. Capt. Kevin Cole was impressed with Monday's fluke fishing in the ocean for Down Deep Charters at Brown's in Keyport. Three anglers aught 20 keepers in a few hours. Today be ran Down Deep Bullet (a Sea Hunter) down the beach for bass, but when that didn't work out they switched to catching 18 fluke up to a 6-pounder for four anglers.   Capt. Stan Zagleski said a lack of current hurt the drift in Raritan Bay today, but he ended up putting a catch of fluke together on Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands.  Bob Fratangero Jr. of Emerson won the pool with a 5 1/4-pounder that nosed out two fluke just under 5 pounds by Tiny Goldman of Brick. Jim Fells of Midland Park won Monday with a 7 3/16-pounder. That lack of current also hurt chunking for stripers in the back of the bay this morning. The Bob Finan party from Fair Haven fished with Capt. Hans Kaspersetz and I on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands as hits were hard to come by in the weak current even when we found marks. We were fortunate to boat a striper, and also picked some smallish blues -- one of which was loaded with grass shrimp. Capt. Sal Cursi notes that's a good indication that fluking will be good this summer in the bay. Dave Lilly had a hard time finding big fluke over the weekend, but finally located a 5.4-pounder to take the lead in the Forked River Tuna Club contest.      The Jamaica II from Brielle had a fair all-day fluke trip on Monday. The waters are still on the chilly side, but some sea bass are mixed in. Eric Slonaker took the pool at 6 9/16 pounds, edging his uncle's fluke by an oiuce. At Point Pleasant, the Cock Robin is happy with the large quantity of "pee-wee" blues being jigged to the north. The Queen Mary is loading up on 1-to-4-pound blues on Ava 17 and 27 jigs during the day, while the Father's Day Magic Hourrs trip produced the largest stripers ever on that boat. Bob Gieson boated a 52-pounder -- only to be beaten by a 54-pound trophy striper.   The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported "all you want" 2-to-7-pound blues on jigs.
